Professional nursing demands continue to grow in Florida as the population ages. A large number of Florida residents are reaching retirement age or older, which means the rising need for medical care in doctors’ offices and hospitals. In fact, one study found that seniors are driving Florida’s population growth. There were an estimated 4.9 million adults aged 65 and up in 2018, according to the report. That number would have grown in the past three years.

Hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and medical offices treat patients in this age group on a consistent basis. To meet this increased demand, professional nurses, also known as registered nurses, are needed in the field more than ever.

Growing Healthcare Needs

People over 65 have medical concerns that they may not have had to deal with when they were younger. According to the National Council on Aging, “approximately 80% of older adults have one chronic disease, and 77% have at least two.” Chronic diseases include diabetes and heart disease as well as cancer and stroke. These diseases need to be treated and managed, often requiring lifestyle changes and regular visits to the doctor.

Registered nurses will need to be trained in elder care. Because people are generally living longer and the population in Florida is growing older, the need for nurses with the proper training is great. Aging populations need knowledgeable, compassionate nurses to help them to manage their care.

How Professional Nurses Meet the Demand

The Professional Nursing Program (PNP) at SABER College prepares students to become Registered Nurses in Florida. Students take courses in medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric, geriatric, and psychiatric nursing. Every life stage is covered in the program. This means that nurses who graduate from the program know how to care for patients of all ages.

A combination of lectures and hands-on training will give nurses all of the knowledge and skills that they need to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), a requirement for entering the field.

At the successful completion of the PNP, students will also obtain an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. The degree is fully accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and licensed by the Commission for Independent Education (CIE).
